Scammers Using Text Messages to Target PUD Customers

September 9, 2016 – Columbia River People’s Utility District (PUD) is warning customers of a new text message scam.

A customer received a text message that said his account was behind and that he needed to make a payment to avoid having his electric service disconnected. The message listed an incorrect account number. It instructed the customer to respond to a specific phone number or email address.

The PUD does not use automated text messaging to communicate with customers. If you receive a message like this, ignore it. Do not call the number or send an email to that address. Please report the message to your local police department.
