As fall approaches and temperatures begin to drop, now is the perfect time to prepare your home for the colder months ahead. Taking a few simple steps today can help improve your comfort and lower your energy bills this winter.
Start with your attic insulation. The attic is one of the most important areas for preventing heat loss. We recommend attic insulation levels of about R-49, roughly equivalent to 14-16 inches of insulation, depending on the material. If your insulation is below this level and you heat your home with electricity, you may be eligible for insulation rebates.
Seal air leaks. Small gaps around windows, doors, and other openings can let warm air escape and cold air enter. Caulking, weatherstripping, and door sweeps are inexpensive ways to reduce drafts and improve energy efficiency.
Maintain your heating system. Schedule annual maintenance and clean or replace your furnace filters regularly. Dirty filters restrict airflow, causing heating systems to work harder, use more energy, and wear out sooner. This is especially important following recent smoky conditions, which can cause filters to clog more quickly.
While high-efficiency air filters can improve indoor air quality, some older heating systems may not be designed for the increased airflow resistance they create. Check your furnace manufacturer's recommendations or consult an HVAC technician before installing a high-MERV filter.
A little preparation now can help keep your home warmer, more comfortable, and more energy efficient all winter long.
