The Scappoose Senior Center recently received an Economic Development Grant for its thrift store and a van for its bread store courtesy of Columbia River PUD.
The PUD's Board of Directors authorized a $5,000 grant during their July Board Meeting. This money will help repair siding at the thrift store to help keep it functioning. The thrift store brings in between $7,000 and $9,000 a month to help fund operations at the Senior Center.
The thrift store is staffed entirely by volunteers.
"Any time you can help a senior organization, that's fantastic," said PUD General Manager Michael Sykes.
The PUD's van was declared a surplus item during the May CRPUD Board Meeting, and was donated to the Senior Center.
The van will provide a reliable way for the Senior Center to transport bread from various bakeries in Portland to the Scappoose Senior Center Bread Place on SW Dutch Canyon Road in Scappoose. With fold-down seats in the back two rows, it will make loading and unloading cases of bread more convenient.
Volunteers at the Bread Place go into Portland 6 days a week to collect bread. They then provide it at no cost to members of the community. The Bread Place, which is staffed strictly by volunteers, collects donations to help fund activities and operations at the Senior Center.
The Bread Place can bring in up to $2,000 a month for the Senior Center, estimated Pete McHugh of the Senior Center.
"A big thank you to the CRPUD Board and Staff. You guys come through when we need it the most," McHugh said. "This van will help keep our service of free bread to those who need it most going for many years into the future."
Also at their July Board Meeting, the PUD awarded a $5,000 Economic Development Grant to United Way of Columbia County to aid in the construction of pickleball courts in Rainier. The project will turn one tennis court in the Rainier City Park into four dedicated pickleball courts.
