Emergencies happen. Whether you are faced with a storm, a natural disaster or an extended power outage, you can keep your family safe and comfortable by preparing a home emergency kit. Here are 15 essential items to include - don’t forget to prepare a smaller kit for each car that you drive.
- Water - One gallon of water per person, per day for three days
- Flashlight - With extra batteries and/or glow sticks
- Bandages - And a First aid kit with reference guide
- Radio - Battery operated radio with extra batteries
- Map of local area - In case evacuation to shelters is necessary
- Food - Three day supply of nonperishable, high-protein, high-calorie food that family members enjoy: energy bars, canned tuna, peanut butter, etc.
- Manual can opener
- Crescent wrench - For utility shut off
- Money - Extra cash and coins
- Clothing - Blankets, extra clothing, sturdy shoes and gloves
- Pet Supplies - Food and water for pets
- Contacts - Emergency contact list
- Duct tape and plastic sheeting / large plastic garbage bags
- Copy of American Red Cross “Before Disaster Strikes” booklet
- Other important items - Such as three day supply of prescription medication, an extra pair of eyeglasses, copies of important documents (marriage certificates, insurance policies, birth certificates, passports) and comfort items, such as toys or books.
