PUD Awards Six Scholarships

Columbia River People's Utility District (PUD) has awarded six scholarships to high school seniors graduating from area schools. Three $4,000 Utility Industry Scholarships and three $1,000 Community Service Scholarships were awarded.
Utility Industry Scholarships
The PUD began offering Utility Industry Scholarships in 2008 in an effort to attract more of todays best and brightest students to careers in the electric utility industry. The scholarship is available to students who intend to pursue utility-specific careers, including engineering, line work and renewable energy.
The PUD awarded three Utility Industry scholarships this year:
- Robert Forman, who graduated from St. Helens High School, is planning a career in electrical engineering or renewable energy.
- Derek Eidem, also from St. Helens High School, is planning to become a renewable energy specialist.
- Colin Heath, from Scappoose High School, is planning to study mechanical engineering.
Community Service Scholarships
The PUD has offered Community Service Scholarships for over 20 years. These scholarship recognize students for community involvement throughout their high school careers.
The PUD awarded three Community Service Scholarships this year:
- Rachel Childers of St. Helens High School was recognized for her volunteer work at St. Johns Medical Center and with the Columbia County Teen Court Program.
- Alison Gallaher of Rainier High School was recognized for launching the Clothes for Columbians Charity, which provides clothes to underpriveleged students.
- Emily Rocha of Scappoose High School was recognized for her 14 years as a volunteer for the Scappoose Library.

Columbia River People's Utility District provides electric service to 18,560 customers in Columbia and Multnomah Counties in Oregon.
The PUD employs 50 people and had FY2009 gross revenues of $26.9 million.
