April 14, 2008
The drive-up payment box at Columbia River PUD was burglarized over the weekend and customer payments were stolen from it. The break-in occurred sometime between 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 11 and noon on Sunday, April 13.
The PUD recommends that customers who made payments at the drive-up
payment box over the weekend take the following actions:
- Contact your financial institution immediately to notify them of the theft and stop payment on your check.
- File an identity theft report with the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office by calling (503) 366-4611. The PUD has filed a general report with the sheriff’s office about the incident. The case number is 08-0464.
- Contact the PUD’s Customer Accounts Department at (503) 397-0590 to notify the PUD that your payment was one of those stolen and to receive information on identity theft prevention measures and alternative paymentoptions.
“Because of the potential for identity theft, we are taking this incident very
seriously and we encourage customers who made payments over the weekend to
do the same,” said PUD General Manager Kevin Owens.
