PUD awards scholarships to seven graduates

Columbia River People's Utility District has awarded scholarships to seven graduating high school seniors in recognition of their outstanding community service. This year's winners were Shawna Ashlock, Nicole Bailey, Breaunna Duwadi, Amanda Garcia, Shyla Iverson, Eric Wellington and Justin Wilson.
Shawna Ashlock
Shawna dedicated many volunteer hours working and fundraising for the Columbia Humane Society. She founded the St. Helens Animal Rights Club and is a National Honor Society member, an Environmental Science Club member and a student council representative. She plans to attend Portland State University and become an education major. Shawna received a $1,500 scholarship from the PUD.
Breaunna Duwadi
Breaunna volunteered at the St. Helens Public Library for two years and served as the editor-in-chief of the school newsletter. She is a member of the Key Club and the National Honor Society. She plans to attend Oregon State University to begin working on her pre- medicine degree. She received a $750 scholarship from the PUD.
Justin Wilson
Justin has completed missions in Mexico, Yakima Washington and inner-city Los Angees. For his senior project he managed the production of memorial flag cases for the families of fallen soldiers from Oregon and southwest Washington. He plans to attend the University of Portland and major in Business Administration. Justin received a $1,500 scholarship from the PUD.
Shyla Iverson
Shyla helped raise over $6,000 for Doernbecher Children's Hospital through the Kids Making Miracles program. She was a student body representative and a member of the science bowl team, the oceanography bowl team and the world quest team. She plans to attend the University of Portland and major in nursing. Shyla received a $750 scholarship from the PUD.
Eric Wellington
Eric was a part of many different community service projects, helping at the food bank, for the children's safety fair, for beach cleanups and for Red Cross blood drives. He even organized a community marching band one summer when the school was between band directors. He plans to attend Oregon State University in the fall to begin working on his bachelor's degree. Eric received a $1,500 scholarship from the PUD.
Nicole Bailey
Nicole was the National Honor Society President, the vice president of Oregon Student Safety on the Move and the yearbook editor. She also served as an outdoor school counselor and a vacation bible school counselor. She plans to attend Concordia University in the fall to begin working on her bachelor's degree. She received a $750 scholarship from the PUD.
Amanda Garcia
Amanda was awarded a $1,500 scholarship in recognition of the outstanding turn-around she made. The selection committee was impressed by her understanding of the importance of education, hard work, self-respect and respect for others. She plans to continue her studies at Portland Community College this fall.

Columbia River People's Utility District provides electric service to 18,100 customers in Columbia and Multnomah Counties in Oregon.
